One of the major challenges when caring for war veterans is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) they go through. This is the shock of the mind and body experiences after experiencing life threatening events and trauma. This usually requires professional help and therapy for the war veteran to accept this part of their past.
As a provider of elderly care, we have provided care for war veterans for PTSD. Here are some useful tips:
- Don’t take the symptoms of PTSD personally
If they seem distant, irritable, angry, or closed off, remember that this is because of their PTSD and not because of you personally. - Don’t pressure them into talking
Just let them know you’re there if they want to talk. It’s your understanding that provides comfort, not anything you say. - Be patient and understanding
Feeling better can take time, so be patient with the pace of their recovery. - Try to anticipate and prepare for PTSD triggers
Certain sights, sounds, sights, and smells can cause an upsetting reaction. Be aware of these triggers to help them calm down better. - Take care of yourself
Don’t ignore your own needs. Avoid burnout by making time for yourself and learn to manage your stress. You’ll be of better help when you are calm and focused.
